Blaise Pascal lived from 19 June 1623 to 19 August 1662, and died shortly after his 39th birthday. He was a mathematician and a Catholic philosopher.  Together with Fermat, he created the field of probability theory. The programming language Pascal was named after him.  He was also a very religious man, and in 1654 he had a mystical experience. We know about this because he wrote a note to himself that was sewn into his coat and found only after his death: “Fire.
